WHY ART IS IMPORTANT?
An arts-rich education from an early age develops individual creativity and self-expression. Working in art and design helps children to develop creative problem-solving skills and can increase their confidence and motivation. When giving children instructions and following art instruction can help the children with the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness. Integrating art and design with other disciplines reaches children who might not otherwise be engaged in classwork. Art experiences boost critical thinking, teaching children to take their time to be more careful and thorough in how they observe the world. Art provide challenges for learners at all levels and connects children with their own culture as well as with the wider world.
IMPLEMENTATION – ART - PLANNING & SEQUENCING OF KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
At Porter Croft, the teaching and implementation is based on the National Curriculum and linked to topics to ensure a well-structured approach to this creative subject. The children are taught Art as part of their termly topic work. Areas covered include sculpture mosaics, printing based on topic work, such as the Tudor houses, nature, Aboriginal art, World War propaganda posters, painting and the works of famous artists from around the world. The work of famous local, national and international artists are explored to enhance the children’s learning. The art curriculum will develop children’s critical abilities, as well as an understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through the study of a diverse range of artists.

IMPACT OF OUR ART CURRICULUM
Impact
Within art and design, we strive to instil an appreciation and enjoyment of the arts enriching the children’s learning experience. At Porter Croft Primary, our art and design curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. We focus on progression of knowledge and skills and vocabulary progression also form part of the units of work.
Ongoing assessments take place throughout the year. Teachers use this information to inform future lessons; ensuring children are supported and challenged appropriately. This data is analysed on a termly basis to inform and address any trends or gaps in attainment.
Children are expected to evaluate work in this subject, be it their own pieces of art or other peoples. This is done through a positive mind-set promoting the ideology of I could have done better if…. My work could be improved by…… Pupils are also encouraged to give their opinions on pieces of art work and explain their reasoning behind their thoughts.
The Art Co-ordinator will gather evidence from children’s work, teacher feedback and pupil feedback. They will also evaluate displays, the understanding of concepts and skills and the use of vocabulary by pupils when talking about this subject. We strive for our pupils to be able to recognise various artist studied and have an understanding about art across the world and its place in history.
Evidence from book scrutiny, book looks, working walls, lesson study, staff meetings, lesson observations and planning documents is used to access children’s knowledge and grasp of Art.
INCLUSION
All Art lessons/activities are designed and planned to include all children through a range of approaches. Lessons are planned to facilitate the best possible outcome for all children within the class.
