ANTI-RACIST SCHOOL AWARD
We are proud to announce that Porter Croft has achieved the BRONZE Anti-Racist Award from Leeds Beckett University’s Centre for Race, Educational & Decoloniality (CRED). We are also delighted to be the one of the first primary schools in the country to be recognised for our commitment to tackling racism and promoting an anti-racist culture and we are grateful for all the support we have received from pupils, staff, parents and our local community. The Bronze award is an important step on our journey to eradicating racism and we will continue to improve and hone our school policies, procedures, curriculum and partnerships.
The Anti-Racist Awards focuses on the following areas to embed school improvement:
Governance
Leadership and Management
School Environment
Professional Learning and Development
Hidden Curriculum
Pedagogy and Curriculum
Parents/Carers and Community Partnerships
The awards aim to improve race equality within schools while promoting safety and wellbeing for BAME staff, students, parents, carers, and those in the community.
During the last two years, we have redesigned the school curriculum so that it is more representative of the globally diverse community we teach. Staff and governors have undergone training on anti-racism structures, such as, colourism, unconscious bias and micro-aggressions and how they impact pupil’s lives. All pupils have also received lessons which support them in discussing racism and how to build an anti-racist world. We have listened to the needs of our school community before making improvements and changes to the design of our curriculum and school environment.
Our next step will be going for the silver award and we are taking a whole-school approach to anti-racism, identifying any gaps in which to develop and strengthen our school systems. We are committed to the long term work that is required for institutional change. We will continue our work towards promoting anti racism and inclusion within Porter Croft.

SCHOOL VISION
At Porter Croft we embed equality and diversity into our curriculum. We aim to create learning, teaching and assessment environments and experiences that proactively eliminate discrimination, promote equality of opportunity and foster good relations in a manner that values, preserves and responds to diversity.
To do this, we have designed our curriculum around the 17 United Nation Sustainable development goals which also link to Oxfam Global Citizenship charter. Each term has an overriding concept which permeates throughout the whole school curriculum which has been redesigned to enable the concepts to be embedded fully.
The concepts are:
Identity and diversity
Sustainable development
Globalisation and interdependence
